Milliways Bar: for Edward

So, there is this wacky bar-shaped place and Josh approves of it. Really, she does. It's shiny and sparkly and the randomness of the ins and outs and how-about-thats delight her. But, the trickster is also bored and so she's at the Observation Window, playing with her curly straw and looking, well.

Bored.

The defenseless Edward didn't buy, but his lips rounded out more toward a smirk.

"I haven't a reason to yet. Josh."

"Well, dude, the door's just there," she points to the back door.

Edward didn't look beyond her. He found that door, and the Lake window, when he'd looked beyond her earlier.

Summer in full sun.

Wasn't that just his luck.

He walked past her, hands lose but close, amusement in his tone. "No one should tell the Scots their land makes it to the end."

"Only here. My world, you wouldn't want to live there."

Edward chuckled, letting his gold eyes run over the room again.

"Nor mine."

"Why not?"

Edward glanced over his shoulder at her, gold eyes smoldering with his own amusement.

"Scots."

"See, in my world, Scotland's just been blown up."

His expression was fluid from arrogant amused to professional curiosity, as though somehow they were meant to flow from one to the other and no one else realized it.

"What for?"

(oh, he is interesting)

"I forget, now."

Edward looked surprised by her comment.

"They do that often in your world? Blow up countries for easily forgotten reasons?"

A smile quirked his lip lopsided at the end of that as he considered it a rather fitting term for dozens of the little human, and inhuman, wars in his own.

"It's like most worlds here, only about three hundred years in the future. The climate's fucked, and about two hundred years ago a lot of things went...boom."

Edward was watching her expression, even as he listened to the silence again. A very natural habit against strange comments. Because three hundred years was even stranger than some of the doubtful earlier statements.

"Not a very palatable future."


He'd see it given enough time.

"You speak as if your present is wonderful. It wasn't, trust me."

Edward wasn't about to defend Forks, Washington as a wonderful place. It was a two year waste of time. In high school. Again. Monotony and boredom and little trite minds living little trite lives toward little trite deaths.

His lips curled, "Which is why the world picked me out and brought me here."

"Or the Landlord, or fate, or chance, or something other twisting you'll never know..."

A quick shrug.

"People tend to imagine golden ages, and really they weren't at all."

"Just life being lived how it could be at the time," Edward agreed, evenly.

He'd seen enough of that even in hundred years. And in hundreds more through the nearness of his family, Jasper and Carlisle especially.

"Exactly."

Beat.

"Sure you don't want to come outside?"

"Not just yet."

He seemed amused at his own joke, having turned back to looking at people.

"And there other kinds of vampire, too", but although she speaks, her voice is a whisper, pitched only to him.

Edward, usually on the other side of this kind of exchange, snarled almost silently in response.

To the game and the comment.


"And what are you?"

"Trickster. Like a fairy." She shrugs. "What else would call someone who is the child of gods, and yet not one herself?"

Edward was picturing something with a fox tail and fairy wings. Reflexively. At her. On purpose. Even as he looked from her back to the room not sighing.

Hmm. Not bad. Fox-red tail, butterfly wings hued with all the colours of autumn...

She (appears to) swish her tail, open and shut her wings.

"Exactly."

Edward was amused by it working, even if it didn't change the expression on his face. Decades spent listening and not being heard was on one hand very annoyed and on the other hand amusing.
